Achieve Balance Counselling

About Meghan Schuurman

Meet Meghan, Clinical Counsellor, Registered Social Worker

Hi! I’m Meghan Schuurman, a local Registered Social Worker, with a Masters of Social Work. I have 10 years of experience working with children and youth in social service and mental health settings in Ontario and BC, but more importantly, I am a person who has empathy and curiosity at my centre, and is driven by the desire to connect with others in the pursuit of healing. I believe that all humans are wired to heal, and that we need each other in order to do this hard work.

Taking that first step of pursuing counselling for yourself or your child requires vulnerability and strength. I hope to offer a kind, compassionate and gentle space to step into when you bravely take that first step. We need to feel safe and free from judgement in order to enter into the work of healing, and I endeavor to create an environment in the therapy room that makes that possible.

A Safe, Relationship-Centered Approach to Healing

I believe in the transformative power of creating space where children, youth, and families feel truly seen, heard, and understood. Feeling safe within the therapeutic relationship is essential for healing, and I am intentional about fostering an environment that supports openness, trust, and emotional safety.

I also believe that storytelling is central to healing. Each person’s story is unique, and sharing it helps us make sense of the world and our place within it. I am committed to walking alongside individuals and families, offering reflection, encouragement, and celebration throughout the healing process.

Strength-Based and Neuro-Affirming Counselling Services

Over the past 4.5 years, I have worked in multiple non-profit settings focused on the assessment of neurodevelopmental differences in children and youth. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the resilience it takes for families to access assessments and diagnostic services, as well as the importance of mental health support that is responsive to neurodivergent needs.

I am passionate about providing counselling that builds on each child or youth’s strengths and honours their unique profile. I strive to work in a neuro-affirming way and remain committed to ongoing learning in this area. Both professionally and personally, I am surrounded by neurodivergent children and adults who continually shape my understanding of neurodivergent thinking and the challenges of navigating a neurotypical world.

Integrative Therapeutic Modalities and Play-Based Approaches

My counselling work is informed by attachment theory and interpersonal neuroscience. I draw from emotionally focused therapy (EFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as well as experiential and somatic approaches. When working with children and youth, my practice is grounded in Child-Centred Play Therapy and Synergetic Play Therapy models.

My background in social work has also fostered a strong “big-picture” perspective. I pay close attention to the broader systems that influence individual and family wellbeing, and I believe that strong, connected communities play a vital role in building resilience. Whenever possible, I enjoy sharing local resources or helping families find specialized supports that align with their needs.

Creativity, Community, and Life Beyond the Therapy Room

I am also an artist and visual thinker, and creativity is woven into all aspects of my therapeutic work. I enjoy integrating art-making, movement, and creative expression into sessions, and I have witnessed the powerful impact of therapeutic art firsthand. While living in Ontario, I ran an art studio offering therapeutic arts programming for teens, an experience that continues to inform my work today.

Outside of counselling, I am a mother to two school-aged children who continually remind me how to see the world through a child’s eyes. I feel grounded by time in nature, growing flowers on my farm, and working with my hands in the soil. I value authenticity, reflection, compassion, and community connection, and I am deeply committed to the pursuit of human and environmental justice—both personally and professionally.
